Ooops. I misread the question. The pope's palace was one of about ten areas we stopped and explored. The area I liked best was the Point du Gard with the Roman aqueduct, Les Baux de Provence with its Fortified village and the old stone quarry where they have a fantastic light show against the walls inside the quarry.

Not sure about which day but would get there as early as you can to avoid the mid morning tour groups.

Traveling with disabled lady, is the Pope's Place wheelchair friendly?

It isn't very wheelchair friendly - lots of steps. Not sure if it helps but the Pont D'Avignon has a wheelchair lift if you're looking for places to go.
